John is the President and CEO of the Raleigh Rescue Mission, bringing over 25 years of executive leadership in non-profit and service industries.
Prior to joining the Raleigh Rescue Mission, John was the CEO of The Good Samaritan Health Center in Atlanta, GA. John led a team of “proactive servant leaders” who daily implemented primary medical, mental health and dental care, along with an urban farm, teaching kitchen for healthy cooking habits and a fitness center. While at Good Samaritan, John started or maximized the services that the health center offered to “working poor” and homeless individuals. Because Good Samaritan was located in an area of Atlanta where the residents lived “13 years less” than other residents in more affluent areas of Atlanta, the services provided were “literally life changing.” During the process of expanding the health center’s services to an increasing number of “homeless individuals’, John and his wife Cynthia felt that God was calling them to work exclusively with families and individuals experiencing homelessness. After talking to several organizations, they felt God calling them to work with the Raleigh Rescue Mission.
John states, “As I look back on my life, I believe God prepared me for my role at the Raleigh Rescue Mission beginning with my childhood experiences.”
John grew up in poverty in rural Mississippi during the 1960’s. This was a very fearful and oppressive time in our country and in his own family’s life; however, God had other plans. God used a family who had power and resources to protect & give John’s family the opportunity to earn a living. The actions of this privileged family “standing in the gap” for John’s family gave him hope. This hope inspired him to continue in school and graduate from high school and college.
After graduating from the University of Memphis, John moved to Atlanta and started his career in banking. His desire to help young people grow and develop in a work setting led him to work for Chick-Fil-A Inc. and Wendy’s Inc. as a franchise operator. As a result of taking care of his aging parents, John started a new career as a regional executive with national & regional Senior Living companies. While the for-profit roles were rewarding, John believed God wanted him to use his gifts and experiences to assist underprivileged individuals to be successful.
Throughout John’s life God has used individuals to mentor him as he moved to the next level of success. John states, “My mission in life is to stand in the gap for the women, children and men who come to the Raleigh Rescue Mission for assistance in their quest for a new life–moving from Homelessness to Independence.”
