A Life Changed at RRM
(Continued from Stories of Changed Lives)

In 1999, Steve managed to get free from his addiction. “I stayed sober seven years. I had an apartment and a truck and worked for myself as a handyman.” But his clean streak ended when he wrecked the truck last fall and lost his livelihood.

“I drank for six months and was beat down bad. I was looking for a train with my name on it I could step out in front of. My heart was so cold, I didn’t think I had one. And I didn’t like anybody or myself.”

May 5, Steve passed Raleigh Rescue Mission during our Downtown Raleigh Festival of Hope. “Somebody said I could get a free meal and asked me if I wanted a tour. I said I guessed so. I’d never heard of the Mission. I took the tour, they blessed the food and I ate.”

Days later, Steve returned to the Mission to ask for help filling a prescription. This time, he spent an hour with a counselor talking and praying. When asked if he’d thought about joining the Life Plan recovery program, Steve said no, but would like to.

Though it’s been only a few months, Steve’s life has changed dramatically. “I hadn’t read a book in 40 years, but I read Purpose Driven Life cover to cover,” he says enthusiastically. “I prayed for help with reading, then I buzzed through it like it was nothing! Something like that you don’t forget!”

“I know I’m saved, and when I got a question I ask it. I’m thirsty and I got ears to hear. I’m amazing myself! I’ll hold the door for you now instead of taking your wallet. I’ve never been so happy in my life.”
